Creature Creation

Filed under: General — MikeW @ 8:57 pm

Just came across the work of Theo Jansen (example below) from a link on Jim Rossignol’s blog. His creations are truly amazing. Their seemingly organic movements are both beautiful and strangely spooky (but in quite a peaceful way).

Created Creature

Their movements seem creepy just because you know they are not alive. Or are they?

No. But still, Pretty Funky.

Wedding Portfolio Corners

Filed under: General — MikeW @ 5:45 pm

I’ve had a bit of a break from my project over the last couple of weeks and I am feeling very refreshed now. I’ve been busy though, improving the admin tools for myluminaries.com (I wrote a custom content management web app to run their site a while back) and hanging out with some friends in England. I also attented a good friend’s wedding and was their “Wedding Photographer” - No doubt stressful enough when you don’t know the bride and groom but when you do you don’t want to be making any mistakes! When I get a copy of the pictures I took (over 338 or something) maybe I’ll put some up.

Anyway, You probably don’t care about all that, do you? Sigh.

I’m back to Sweden in a couple of days and with the exception of a short trip out to see a friend I will be working non-stop until I have my portfolio done and that usually means that I keep this thing more up to date with some more portfolio related stuff (need to write alot of documentation so maybe I’ll start posting first-drafts here) and what ever else comes to mind.

Things You Should Do:

  • See Mono Effecto (in fine form) on the 2nd July at the Barfly in Camden. Check their webpage for details
  • See My Luminaries (also in damn fine form I have been reliably informed!) on the 7th July at The Elbow Room in Islington. Again check their site for info.
  • Eat at The Thai Corner in Reading town center - Karin and I used to eat there regularly about a year ago and they still remember us. Good food and service and reasonably priced.
  • Be amazed that my favourite place to sit and work on my notes in Uppsala, Ofvandahls, has it’s own entry in the Wikipedia

Hiding Sweden

Filed under: General — MikeW @ 4:22 am

Just to let various people know, I’m back in Sweden again after a quick trip to England. Will be back in England again on June 23rd for a bit. Hoping to cover some more of my current work here but I won’t be getting around to that until Karin’s and my new room is sorted out properly - currently we are hiding from it (or more accurately from the piles of boxes within it) in Stockholm…

I just keep thinking about having seen things. I’m a Chainsaw(er)

Filed under: General — MikeW @ 6:34 am

Just in case anyone is interested, the Police are selling a chainsaw at a discount price over in Reigate….

Why would anyone want to buy a chainsaw that has been siezed by the police? It might have body parts stuck in the teeth or something. Yuk.

Also if you read an advert for a “Rolex” watch (their quotes, not mine) that read “White metal watch with white face. Says “Rolex Explorer II” on face” you wouldn’t exactly go rushing to buy it, even if it was from the Police…

Testing Crab

Filed under: General — MikeW @ 3:27 am

I’m just seeing if I correctly set up my Flickr account to enable me to blog on photos directly from Flickr.

To make this slightly less boring I have chosen a picture (from Le Hub) that I can tell you a random story about.

When I was in Cornwall on holiday as a kid I was at a small enclosed beach when a man, dressed in a wet suit with a snorkel and holding a harpoon gun, appeared out of nowhere and waded into the sea and promptly dissappeared. Sometime afterwards he appeared again from the sea carrying a crab similar to this monstrosity. After letting it waddle about the beach, terrifying young children he then took it back to the sea. Ah, the mad Cornish folk.
